Course overview:
Victoria University offers an elementary NZSL course in the second trimester annually.

This course builds on beginner's knowledge of NZSL with a continued focus on understanding and using the language in everyday situations. Lectures and readings provide background information about the Deaf community and the structure of NZSL. Students will extend their mastery of core vocabulary and grammatical structures, using these in dialogues and short narratives. A schedule of weekly topics will be handed out separately. The course will expand comprehension and expressive skills in the Learning Objective areas (refer to web link).

Course overview:
Victoria University of Wellington offers "NZSL201 - Intermediate NZSL A" course annually in the first trimester.

The course will extend the receptive and expressive skills of students who have a foundation in NZSL, and will examine cultural perspectives and issues relevant to the Deaf community. Teaching will focus on increasing students' vocabulary, expressive fluency, knowledge and use of grammatical structures in NZSL.

There are only 20 places available. The course is full for 2021. Places for 2022 will be available on 1st October 2021.

Course overview:
New Zealand Sign Language 6 extends your receptive and expressive skills in NZSL conversation, whether it is narrative storytelling, making suggestions or giving information, at an intermediate level.

You will need to purchase an e-book on NZSL grammar from Bridget Williams Books. The cost of the e-book is not included in the course fee.

Who should attend:
NZSL 6 is suitable for those who have completed NZSL 5 or its equivalent (around 100 hours’ tuition in NZSL) and who wish to continue learning for personal or business reasons.

Course objectives:
Have conversations in NZSL with people from the Deaf community that recount personal experiences, describe needs, announce and explain information, make suggestions and recommendations
Give simple instructions or rules for an activity or game
Explain goals for future activities/skills
Express and respond to concerns and advice
Report and discuss key demographics about New Zealand
Explain and contrast an everyday ritual/event in your culture
Use NZSL grammar – classifiers, rhetorical questions, conditionals, role shifting, adverbial inflection, modals, causation, numbers - percentages, fractions, ratio.
Develop further awareness of the cultural context for using NZSL with Deaf people

Following on from New Zealand Sign Language 1, this post-beginners’ course will focus on receptive and expressive skills for everyday communication in NZSL. This class is in NZSL only – so leave your voice at the door and come and learn sign language in a fun and interactive way!

Who should attend:
New Zealand Sign Language 2 is suitable for those who have completed NZSL 1 or its equivalent (approximately 20 hours tuition in NZSL), and who wish to continue to study NZSL for personal or business reasons.

Course objectives:
Have basic conversations in NZSL with people from the Deaf community about yourself, family and friends, everyday activities, feelings, and more.
Demonstrate culturally appropriate use of conversational behaviours in NZSL
Recognise and use NZSL grammar: topic-comment statements, agreement verbs, number (age, time, ordinal, calendar), basic classifiers
Learn more about Deaf culture and the Deaf community.
