These frequently asked questions explain who can join NZSLTA, the different membership options, the benefits of being a member, how to renew your membership, voting and Committee eligibility, member responsibilities, benefits for registered tutors, access to TeachSign resources, and who to contact if you have questions about your membership.

Who can join?

Anyone who meets NZSLTA’s membership criteria and supports the aims and objectives of the Association may apply for membership.

What membership categories are available?

NZSLTA offers different membership categories:

  • Qualified
  • Provisional
  • Trainee
  • Non-Certified
  • Supporter

The appropriate membership category depends on your qualifications, experience, and circumstances.

When does membership start?

Your membership becomes active once your application has been approved and your membership payment has been received.

When does my membership expire?

The membership year runs from 1 April to 31 March each year. Your membership expires on 31 March and must be renewed for the next membership year.

What do members receive?

NZSLTA members receive a range of benefits, including:

  • NZSLTA news and updates, including emails and newsletters
  • Access to the NZSLTA Teachers Hub, a private Facebook group for members to connect and network
  • Discounted registration fees for conferences, professional development opportunities, and workshops
  • Access to the TeachSign website and selected teaching resources
  • The right to attend General Meetings
  • Voting rights and eligibility for Committee roles, where applicable to the member's membership category
  • Opportunities to contribute to and support the NZSL teaching profession

What additional benefits are available to members with NZSL tutor registration?

Members with NZSL tutor registration may also receive:

  • Full access to all TeachSign teaching resources
  • Free advertising of their NZSL teaching services
  • Inclusion in the NZSL Tutors Directory

How do I renew my membership?

Membership must be renewed annually. To renew your membership, log in to your NZSLTA account and complete the online membership renewal form.

Reminders to renew will be provided through a notice on the website, the NZSLTA newsletter, and the private NZSLTA Teachers Hub Facebook group.

Can my membership category be changed?

Membership categories are managed by NZSLTA. Only authorised NZSLTA administrators and the Registration Advisory Panel (RAP) may change a member’s membership category, where appropriate, based on the member’s registration and current status.

Can I attend NZSLTA General Meetings?

Yes. Members are entitled to attend General Meetings in accordance with the NZSLTA Constitution.

Can I vote at General Meetings?

Yes. Voting rights depend on your membership category and the provisions of the NZSLTA Constitution.

Can I nominate myself or be nominated for a Committee role?

Eligible members may be nominated for Committee roles in accordance with the NZSLTA Constitution and the applicable nomination process.

What are my responsibilities as a member?

Members are expected to:

  • Follow the NZSLTA Constitution, Term of Use, Drawings Policy, Privacy Policy and Member’s Code of Conduct
  • Act professionally and respectfully
  • Keep contact details up to date
  • Renew membership annually
  • Respect the confidentiality and intended use of member-only resources
  • Not share TeachSign resources with anyone who is not a member of the Association

Can I share TeachSign resources with other people?

No. TeachSign resources are provided for the use of eligible NZSLTA members and must not be shared with anyone who is not a member of the Association.

What happens if I no longer want to be a member?

If you no longer wish to be a member, please contact Membership to discuss the process for resigning your membership. Membership may also cease in accordance with the NZSLTA Constitution.
